Lady Jags Softball drops close one to Briarwood, 3-2
In their second game of the Holy Spirit Tournament, the Northridge Lady Jags came up just short in a low scoring affair with Briarwood Christian. Northridge had a one run lead after the second inning, but Briarwood was able to add a runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, then hold off the Lady Jags.
The Lady Jags got off to a decent start, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Riley Hollingshead doubled after the first out of the inning and Anna Cate Henderson doubled with two outs, to drive in Hollingshead. The third out was recorded on the next batter. Briarwood was able to put a run of their own on the board in the bottom half of the inning, resulting in the 1-1 tie after one complete.
Northridge was able to reclaim the lead in the top of the second inning. Sarah Copeland drew a walk as the leadoff batter. Millie Tucker was issued a walk as well, moving Copeland to second. Caroline Pate’s sacrifice advanced Copeland and Tucker to second and third, respectively. Next up, Kenzlee Ringo drew a walk. (And through some sorcery not noted in the official record,) Copeland scored, giving Northridge a 2-1 lead., Tucker advanced to third and Ringo ended up at second on the play. A strikeout, a picked off runner and another strikeout ended the top of the inning for the Lady Jags. Three consecutive outs in the bottom of the inning left Northridge leading 2-1 after two complete innings of play.
The Lady Jags failed to score again in the game, but, unfortunately, Briarwood added one run in the bottom of the third and another in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Northridge was unable to answer in the top of the fifth and Briarwood claimed the victory.
Hollingshead, Anna Grace Reed and Anna Cate Henderson recorded one hit each for Northridge. Henderson and Ringo were credited with one RBI each. Hollingshead and Copeland scored one run apiece.
Henderson completed four innings in the circle, recording two strikeouts while giving up three runs on five hits.
