Jags Baseball splits Saturday double header at Winfield

The Jags traveled to Winfield for a split double header with Winfield and Bob Jones. The first of the two was a high scoring affair that saw the Jags overcome a four run third inning deficit, to eventually cap the game with a seven run, 22-15 win over Winfield. The second game’s outcome was not as amicable, as the Jags fell to Bob Jones, 8-6.

Northridge 22, Winfield 15

As the visitors, the Jags put up four runs in the top of the first and kept the Winfield bat cooled off in the bottom. Northridge tacked on three more runs in the top of the second, but gave up two in bottom, to secure a 7-2 lead.

The Jags didn’t get on the board in the top of the third, but Winfield exploded for nine runs to take an 11-7 lead. Northridge put up a three run fourth inning, but yielded one, to end the fourth trailing 12-10.

The Jags turned things around in the top of the fifth, scoring eight runs and taking an 18-12 lead. Winfield scored three in the bottom of he sixth to close it to 18-15, with the Jags still out front.

Northridge tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead to 22-15, then held Winfield scoreless for the 22-15 final.

Woolf, Caldwell and Aiden Avery tallied three hits each for the game. Cole had two hits and Obradovich recorded two hits, with one homerun. Messina collected one hit. Obradovich crossed the plate four times for the Jags. Cole, Woolf and Avery scored three runs each. Messina, Malone and Caldwell scored twice, each. Senn and Brock Story each scored once. Caldwell led with five RBIs and Avery collected four. Obradovich recorded three RBIs, with Cole, Woolf and Senn tallying two each. Messina, Malone and Story added one RBI each.

Malone completed 1-2/3 innings, recoding two strikeouts. John Gatlin pitched 2/3, collecting two strikeouts. Nunnally got the win, pitching 1-2/3, striking out four and surrendering no earned runs. Burns Brumfield spent three innings on the mound, striking out two.

Bob Jones 8, Northridge 6

The second game of the day wasn’t quite as productive or kind to the Jags. After coming from behind to hold hold a one run lead after four, the Jags just couldn’t keep up with Bob Jones, eventually running out of gas in the 8-6 loss.

The Jags opened the top of the first by breaking the ice on the board with a single run. Bob Jones one-upped the Jags by scoring two in the bottom half. The second inning was a repeat of the first, with Bob Jones holding a 4-2 lead after two complete innings.

The Jags evened the score at 4-4 by plating two runs in the top of the third and holding the Patriots scoreless in the bottom half. Northridge took the lead in the top of the fourth when Milo Obradovich drove in courtesy runner Adam Hall, who was in for Anthony Messina. That run gave the Jags their only lead of the game.

Bob Jones added two runs in their halves of the fifth and sixth innings, taking an 8-5 lead. The Jags looked like they might get things rolling in the top of the seventh, but could only muster one run, a homerun by Evan Malone. Bob Jones ended the game by doubling up the Jags, resulting in the 8-6 loss for Northridge.

At the plate, Malone, Thomas Woolf and Cade Senn collected two hits each. Logan Caldwell, Messina, Obradovich and Kyle Nunnally tallied one hit each. Malone totaled two runs for the Jags. Caldwell, Woolf and Nunnally scored one run each. Malone collected two RBIs, with Obradovich, Woolf, Nunnally and Aiden Avery totaling one RBI each.

Messina completed five innings, striking out five. Senn came in to work one full inning in relief.
