Jags turn the Greenwave blue, 8-2

The Jags made a little trip up I-59 to Buc-ee’s on Friday and took a some time out to play a little baseball at Leeds High School. Getting a strong showing from the 7-8-9 slots in the lineup, the Jags came out with the 8-2 win.

Northridge started out strong, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first. Mayson Elam started things of by being hit by the fourth pitch of the game. In typical style, Elam stole second and the third, to get within 90 feet of the Jags’ first run. Cade Senn drew a walk and Milo Obradovich followed with a double to center, scoring Elam and moving Senn to third base. Jack Sanderson plated Senn and moved Obradovich to third on a single to left. The Jags were unable to cross the plate again in the inning, holding a 2-0 lead.

Leeds’ first batter of the game dropped a fly ball over the fence in left. That was the only offense of the inning for the Greenwave, leaving Northridge with a 2-1 lead.

Logan Caldwell answered with a homerun of his own in the top of the second, and that turned out to be the Jags only click on the scoreboard for the Jags’ half of the inning. The Greenwave picked up a run of their own in the bottom of the second, bringing the score to 3-2, in favor of the Jags.

Both teams gave the run column a break in the third, but the Jags did add a run in the fourth. Caldwell reached on an error and moved to second when Elam reached first on another Greenwave error. Caldwell and Elam moved up a base on a wild pitch and Leeds gifted the Caldwell with a trip across the plate via another error. Leeds failed to score in the bottom half, and Northridge led 4-2 after four innings.

The Jags stretched their lead by another two runs in the top of the fifth. After the first two batters failed to reach base, Kyle Nunnally singled to left. Anthony Messina followed with a walk on four straight pitches, moving Nunnally to second. A single to right by Caldwell moved Nunnally around to score and sent Messina to third. Elam singled to left, scoring Messina and moving Caldwell to second. That was it for the Jags’ offense in the fifth, but they had stretched their lead to 6-2.

After a quiet sixth inning, Northridge added a final two runs in the top of the seventh. Nunnally led off with a single to left and Messina doubled to left, moving Nunnally to third. Caldwell launched a sacrifice fly to left to score Nunnally. Messina held at second, then tagged up and moved to third when Elam sacrificed to center. After Senn drew a walk, Messina scored the last run of the game on a wild pitch. The Jags held the Greenwave off the board in the bottom of the seventh and claimed the 8-2 victory.

Nunnally and Caldwell totaled two hits each for the Jags. Elam, Senn, Obradovich, Sanderson, Woolf and Messina recorded one hit each. Nunnally, Messina and Caldwell scored two runs each for Northridge. Caldwell led the way with three RBIs, with Elam, Obradovich and Sanderson claiming one RBI each.

Caldwell took the win on two innings on the mound, striking out two and surrendering two runs on four hits. Messina spend three innings on the mound, striking out two, without giving up a hit or run. Senn also spend two innings on the mound, giving up two hits but surrendering no runs.
