Big fifth inning catapults Jags Baseball over Bryant, 15-3
After games were canceled on Tuesday, due to weather, the Jags traveled across town to Paul W. Bryant, on Wednesday, to take on the Stampede. Trailing 3-2 after one inning, the Jags tied the game in the third and added three more in the top of the fourth, to take a 6-3 lead. In the top of the fifth, the Jags caught on fire and lit up the board for nine runs and held the Stampede scoreless in the bottom, for a 15-3, 10 run-rule win.
The Jags kicked off the scoring in the top of the first by getting two runs on the board. After a Cade Senn walk and Milo Obradovich single, both Jags moved up a base on steals and Jack Sanderson sacrificed to right, scoring Senn, with Obradovich moving to third. Thomas Woolf singled to center, plating Obradovich for the Jags second and final run of the inning.
Bryant took the lead in the bottom of the first, utilizing a couple singles, a double, a walk and a passed ball. The three runs came with two outs and gave the Stampede a 3-2 lead.
The scoreboard was idle in the second inning, but the Jags tied it up in the top of the third. Mayson Elam singled to center and promptly claimed second on the next pitch. With one out, Elam stole second. Obradovich produced a triple to left, scoring Elam and evening the game up at 3-3.
The Jags took the lead in the top of the fourth, adding four runs. Kyle Nunnally drew a walk, after a fly out to left. Anthony Messina singled to left, with Nunnally moving to third. Elam drew a walk to load the bases. Senn singled to center, scoring Nunnally. Messina moved to third, with Elam advancing to second. Obradovich walked, which plated Messina and moved Elam and Senn up one base, as well. Sanderson picked up his second RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly to Center, scoring Senn. A three up, three down left the Jags with a 6-3 lead after four innings.
Northridge caught fire in the top of the fifth, scoring nine runs. Evan Malone led off with a single. Logan Caldwell doubled to left, moving Malone to third. Messina was hit by pitch, to load the bases. Elam walked, scoring Malone. Senn was up next and doubled to left, scoring Aiden Avery (who was in to run for Caldwell) and Messina. Elam moved to third. Obradovich drew a walk to load the bases again.
Still in the fifth, Sanderson picked up his third and fourth RBIs on a double to left, scoring Elam and Senn and moving Obradovich to third. Woolf singled to bring in Obradovich and move Sanderson to third. Sanderson crossed the plate after a wild pitch and Woolf moved to second. Caldwell was hit by pitch in his second plate appearance of the fifth inning. Woolf advanced to third and Avery (in for Caldwell) advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nunnally’s hard grounder to short scored Woold and Avery, giving the Jags the 15-3 lead. The Jags threatened to score more, but were finally stopped on a ground out with the bases loaded.
The Jags turned in another defensive 1-2-3 inning and claimed the 15-3 victory after five innings.
Senn, Obradovich and Woolf tallied two hits each. Elam, Sanderson, Malone, Caldwell, Nunnally and Messina collected one hit each. Sanderson led the way with 4 RBIs and Senn totaled three. Obradovich, Woolf and Nunnally were credited with two RBIs each. Senn, Obradovich and Messina scored two runs each. Sanderson, Woolf, Malone and Nunnally scored once each.
Woolf completed three innings on the mound for the win, striking out five and walking two. Caldwell struck out two and didn’t surrender a hit or run in two innings of relief.
