Jags drum Patriots in area tournament, 58-41
Northridge and Hillcrest faced off just 11 days ago, with the Jags pulling out a seven point, 35-28 win. It was a much different outcome, this time around. After a somewhat evenly matched first half, the Jags pulled away in the third quarter and held on to the lead to take the 58-41 win in the first round of the AHSAA Class 6A Area 6 playoff.
The Patriots did win the first quarter, but only by one point. Thanks to John Walker’s eight points, the Jags only trailed 9-8 after one period. Scoring for the Jags spread out in the second quarter, with four Jags scoring 16 points. The Patriots managed 10 points, resulting in a 24-19 halftime lead for Northridge.
The Jags blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Patriots 20-9. Four Jags scored points, with Jordan Suiter leading the way, pouring in nine of the Jags’ 20. The result of the run was a somewhat comfortable lead for the Jags at 44-28. The Patriots managed to cut into the Jags’ lead, getting it down to 13 with 3:00 to go. But, the Jags always had an answer for any bucket from the Patriots. Northridge had six players score a total of 14 points in the fourth quarter while outpacing the Patriots 13 points. The result was a convincing 17-point, 58-41 win for the Jags.
The Jags had four players end the night in double digits. Walker and Suiter led the scoring column for the Jags, totaling 14 points each. Jonas Wilkin bested brother Anderson Wilkin by one point, 11 to 10. Marquez Barrera had four and Jalen Green finished with three. Kyle Nunnally rounded out the Jags’ scoring with two. Barrera had four assists. Jack Sanderson and Nunnally had two assists each. Green, Suiter and Jonas Wilkin recorded one assist each.
Anderson Wilkin collected nine rebounds on the night. Jonas Wilkin, Sanderson and Walker tallied six rebounds each. Suiter was credited with three rebounds. Barrera totaled two rebounds. Green and Ryan Halperin collected one rebound each. Walker had two steals, while Barrera and the Wilkin brothers had one steal each.
The Jags will play for the Bryant Stampede for the area championship at Paul W. Bryant High School at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8.
