Jags fend off Bears for 3-2 victory
Northridge Baseball scored all of their runs in one inning, then held off the Sipsey Valley Bears in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon.
The scoreboard was quiet until the Jags made some noise in their top half of the third inning. Rowdy Christensen led off by reaching second base on a error by the Bears. Mayson Elam followed with a double to left, scoring Christensen. Thomas Woolf followed with a single to left, plating Elam. With one out, Woolf’s courtesy runner, Miller Arendale, advanced to second on a ground out. Ford Cole singled to right, moving Arendale to third and advanced to second on the throw. A wild pitch allowed Arendale to cross the plate, scoring the Jags’ third and final run on the inning, and game.
Things were quiet until the Bears scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, closing the Jags’ lead to 3-1. The Bears also added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning, leaving the Jags with a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bears’ first batter reached by virtue of an error by the Jags. Kyle Nunnally hauled in a fly ball for the first out, holding the runner at first. A stolen base put the tying run in scoring position, but a line drive was snagged by Christensen to threw to Elam for the double play at second to end the game, with the Jags holding on for the 3-2 win.
Tayte Dunn led Northridge at the plate with two hits. Elam, Woolf, Cole and Sawyer Thompson added one hit each. Elam and Woolf claimed one RBI each for the Jags.
