Jags Flag Football takes down TCHS, 39-0
The Northridge Jaguars Flag Football Team hosted the Wildcats from Tuscaloosa County High School on Tuesday night at The Ridge. The Jags tallied three interception returns for touchdowns, one punt return for touchdown and used a little misdirection for their last touchdown of the evening. And the defense kept the Wildcats off the board for the shutout. The result was a 39-0 “mercy rule” victory for the Jags.
The Jags won the toss and deferred to the second half. Ky’Asia Tinker ended the Wildcats first possession when she picked off a Wildcat pass and raced to the end zone for the first Jags’ score of the evening. The PAT (run) gave the Jags a 7-0 lead with a little over eight minutes to go in the first quarter.
The first quarter ended following punts by each team on their ensuing possessions. The Jags opened the second quarter with a punt return for a touchdown from TaChelle Allbrooks. The PAT (run) increased the Jags’ lead to 14-0 with a little over 10 minutes to go in the second quarter.
After failed fourth down conversion attempts by both teams, Alana Cornish connected with Ceaira Wine for a catch-and-run touchdown with under a minute to go until halftime. The PAT failed, giving the 20-0 lead that they would carry into the half.
The Jags’ first possession of the second half ended with a punt. The ensuing Wildcat drive ended when Wine picked off a Wildcat pass and outran everyone to the end zone. The PAT failed, but the Jag lead increased to 26-0 with a little under eight minutes to go in the third quarter.
On a fourth and goal conversion attempt by TCHS, Wine notched her second pick-6 when she intercepted a Wildcat pass at the goal line and carried it the opposite end of the field. The PAT was unsuccessful, leaving the Jags with a 32-0 lead with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats’ ensuing possession ended with a turnover on downs. The Jags got their final touchdown when Nina Husack connected with Cornish who lateraled to Wine who outran the Wildcat defense to score her fourth touchdown of the evening. The PAT (run) was successful, giving the Jags a 39-0 lead. At that point, the officials called the game due to the “mercy rule” with a little over two minutes left on the clock.
