Lady Jags top Bryant in OT, 53-51
The Lady Jags hosted Paul W. Bryant at The Ridge on Tuesday night and treated everyone in attendance to some “free basketball” with an overtime period, when the Lady Stampede hit a free throw with 7.7 seconds left to send the game into overtime, tied 46-46.
The end of the first quarter saw the Lady Jags facing a 16-12 deficit. Jakeya Horton heated up and scored nine of the Lady Jags 12 points in the second quarter. Outscoring Bryant 12-9 in the second period resulted in the Lady Jags closing within one point at the half, trailing 25-24. The Lady Stampede outscored the Lady Jags 17-14 in the third quarter and held a 42-38 lead going into the final quarter.
The intensity picked up in the fourth quarter and neither team reached double figures during the last portion of regulation. The Lady Jags scored eight in the final quarter and held Bryant to four. The high emotions of the final minutes saw a number of turnovers and missed shots. The Lady Jags held a one point lead in the waning moments of the game. However, a foul put the Lady Stampede at the line for a potential game winning situation. Fortunately for the Lady Jags, only one of the free throws was successful, sending the game into overtime, tied at 46-46.
In the “free baksetball” session, Ryan Bardenwerper scored five, including the game winner, and Horton added two. The Lady Jags outscored Bryant 7-5 in the extra session for the 53-51 area win.
With the win, Lady Jags’ head coach Jake Carnley picked up his 110th career win at Northridge, making him the winningest coach in program history. Congratulations to Coach Carnley on this milestone!
Bardenwerper led the Lady Jags in the scoring category with 19 points. Horton totaled 17 points and Tremyah Washington added 12. Alana Cornish added three and Ryleigh Brooke Norris chipped in two.
Bardenwerper led the Lady Jags with five assists, while Norris and Washington handed out three each. Horton added one assist.
Washington picked up player of the game honors by notching her first career double-double by adding 12 rebounds to her 12 points. Horton also logged a double-double by adding 10 rebounds to her 15 points. Bardenwerper and Norris pulled down 9 rebounds each. Cornish, Taylor Ivory and Diamond Chankio grabben one rebound each.
